Understanding NSW Driver Licence Classes
At Lee’s Driving School, we help students transition from their first time behind the wheel to mastering heavy vehicles. The licence class you need depends entirely on the type of vehicle you intend to drive and its Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM).
Below is a guide to the different licence categories in NSW and how our expert instructors can help you achieve them.
The Licensing Journey: Ls to Full Licence
Before upgrading to heavy vehicles, every driver starts with the foundational stages:
Learner Licence (L): Available from age 16. You’ll need to pass the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) and maintain a logbook of 120 hours (including 20 night hours).
Provisional P1 & P2: After passing your practical driving test, you’ll move through the P1 (Red) and P2 (Green) stages.
Full Licence: Once you have held your P2 licence for 24 months, you are eligible for a full unrestricted licence and can begin looking into heavy vehicle upgrades.
