ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS (NSW)

Ready to Book Your Truck Training?

To make your booking process as smooth as possible, please ensure you have completed the NSW Government requirements first. Once you have your logbook, we can get you in the driver’s seat immediately!

Getting your truck license is a simple 3-step process. Here is how you get started and how Lee’s Driving School gets you across the finish line.

Step 1: Your Homework (At Service NSW)

Before you can jump in a truck, you need to prove you know the rules. You must do these two things first:

  1. Pass the Knowledge Test: Head to Service NSW and pass the computer-based test (DKT) for your license class. (Make sure to study the Heavy Vehicle Driver Handbook!)

  2. Get Your Logbook: Once you pass, buy the HVCBA Learner’s Logbook.

Important: We cannot legally start your lessons until you have this logbook in your hand!

Step 2: Training with Lee’s (The Fun Part)

Once you have your logbook, call us! This is where we take the stress out of learning. We don’t just teach you to pass a test; we teach you how to handle a truck like a pro.

  • The Basics: We start with cabin drills and pre-trip safety checks.

  • The Skills: We’ll spend time mastering gear shifting, hill starts, and reversing until they feel like second nature.

  • The Road: We’ll take you out into real traffic to master wide turns, lane positioning, and braking safely.

Step 3: Getting You “Test-Ready”

We don’t send you to a high-pressure “test day” with a stranger. Instead, we use the HVCBA (Competency Based Assessment) system.

  • No Surprises: As you master each skill (like reversing or intersections), we sign it off in your logbook.

  • Final Assessment: When you have checked off all the boxes and feel 100% confident, we conduct a final drive to confirm you’re ready.

  • The Result: We sign your Certificate of Competency. You take that back to Service NSW, and they hand you your new license!

 Why Choose Lee’s Driving School?

  • Accredited Assessors: We are certified to train and assess you ourselves.

  • Modern Trucks: Learn in the same types of vehicles you’ll be driving for work.

  • Real Industry Experience: Our trainers (Dave & Steve) have years of experience and a calm, professional approach.

Getting your heavy vehicle license doesn't have to feel like sitting through a long lecture. Since you're dealing with big rigs, let's keep the "boring but important" stuff organized so you can get out of the classroom and into the cab. Here is the breakdown of what we actually do together, side-by-side.

The "Skills & Drills" Breakdown

What You’ll Be Doing (The Fun Part)Why We Make You Do It (The “Not So Fun” Part)
Pre-op Checks: Kicking the tires and checking the fluids like a pro.Safety & Compliance: Because “I thought it was fine” doesn’t work with Highway Patrol.
Start-up & Shutdown: Waking the beast up and putting it to bed safely.Chain of Responsibility: Keeping you and your boss out of legal trouble.
Low-speed Maneuvers: Threading the needle in tight yards without hitting a fence.Space Management: Learning exactly how much “truck” is behind you.
Gear Selection & Braking: Making those shifts smooth enough to not spill your coffee.Speed Management: Because stopping 20 tons takes a bit more than a “tap” on the brakes.
Reversing: Backing into a dock in one go (while everyone is watching).Hazard Perception: Seeing the problem before it becomes an expensive insurance claim.
Hill Starts: Proving you won’t roll back into the hatchback behind you.Road Rule Compliance: Refreshing those rules you forgot since your L-plates.
Highway & Traffic Driving: Dominating the lanes and managing intersections.Fatigue Management: Learning when to pull over before your eyes get heavy.
