HVCBA Driver Training – NSW
What is HVCBA Driver Training?
Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) is an RMS / Service NSW–approved assessment process that allows eligible drivers to upgrade or obtain a heavy vehicle licence without completing a traditional driving test.
The assessment is conducted by a qualified HVCBA assessor and focuses on real-world driving competence and safety, rather than a single test day.
LR – Light Rigid *
MR – Medium Rigid
HR – Heavy Rigid
HC – Heavy Combination

Licence availability may depend on eligibility and prior licence holding periods.

Being medically fit to drive a heavy vehicle

1. You must pass the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test
Before you you can book practical assessment or training
It is a computer-based multiple -choice test about the rules and safety specific to heavy vehicles
2. Study the Required Manuals first
To prepare for the knowledge test, you must read these official NSW resources:

3. Test Format & Content
You will answer 45 questions about road rules and safety relevant to heavy vehicles. NSW Government
You only need to sit one test for the licence class you’re applying for:
Rigid test – if you want an LR, MR or HR licence
Combination test – if you want an HC or MC licence
4. Extra Help & Language Support
If needed, the test can be done in multiple languages (e.g., Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Spanish, etc.), and assistance is available for accessibility needs
5. Booking & What You Need on the Day
Bring:
Completed Licence Application form
Proof of identity
Glasses/contacts if required NSW Government
Failing the test means you can usually re-sit it, but you will need to pay the test fee again
